A New York Minute: Whoo Hoo Wednesday!

Whoo hoo!  That's pretty much what Briggs and I were saying the entire way to New York. "Whoo hoo!  We're finally going!"  "Whoo hoo!  My hair looks awesome! (this was last good straight hair day.)" "Whoo hoo!  We're in the plane!"  "Whoo hoo!  We're at LaGuardia!"  (Yep, we're dorks.)

The trip from LaGuardia was pretty easy.  We were a bit confused about how and where to go to catch the bus to take us to the subway station, but the concierge at LGA was helpful.  Basically we had to get on the Q33 bus and go to Roosevelt and then take the E train into Manhattan.  Easy peasy.

The trip was uneventful, although the bus was a little jarring.  The first time in the subway station was a bit surreal - I was kinda turned around and all the people were a bit overwhelming (we arrived right at rush hour), but we found the E train and squeezed in, luggage and all.
Subway Tiles at Roosevelt station
We knew the closest station to our hotel was Pennsylvania station, what didn't realize is that our hotel was almost literally on top of it!  Very happy accident as almost every subway train we needed went through there.

Check in was uneventful and quick and we really liked the historic feel of the hotel.  Our room was clean and classic (and small, but we expected that for NYC).

Our bed - very, very comfy!  We loved the headboard.

Desk.  We just piled shit on it.

The room's light.  I loved it!  I loved how the light beamed out of it.

Bathroom.  New mirror and fixtures, but otherwise original to hotel
Very small.  We couldn't really open the dresser drawers all the way.
Our view was pretty amazing too...

Concrete Jungle.
After dumping our stuff we needed food. And maybe a beer.  We also wanted to check out a place called The Strand which advertises that it has 18 miles of books.  Yep, we got to NYC and our first thoughts were "We're hungry, need a beer and want books."  We're those gals.

We decided to walk down to Union Square/Strand instead of taking the train.  It was a really lovely evening and after sitting all day the walk was welcome.  Also, we wanted to look around and figured we'd find some decent food en route.

I forgot to take pictures along the route because I was trying to focus on not getting lost, but we basically went up 34th to 6th Avenue and then went South.  About half way we saw a bar that looked like it had a good vibe: Rouge Bar and Restaurant.  We went in and ordered and I got the Mexican wrap with a spinach salad and a Brooklyn Lager...and since I'm totally one of those people who takes pics of my food, here you go.

Nom.  It was huge and I couldn't eat it all.  Closest thing I had to decent Mexican food in NYC.
This would be the first of many, many Brooklyn Lagers on my trip.
I'd recommend Rogue.  I made a point of remembering it so I can go there again after the big move.

Anyways, after dinner, I figured out that not wearing socks was a bad idea because I had developed three blisters on my right foot (and these are the only ones I got - I wore socks after that).  So, next stop: a CVS to get band-aids (something nice about NYC?  There is a pharmacy on every block).  After fixing my feet up, we finished the walk to the Strand.  I wish I had taken a picture of Briggs' face when we got there - she was a kid in a candy store.  As was I.  I looked around at a lot of books but finally settled on a book about the different neighborhoods in and around NYC entitled If You're Thinking of Living In...

I've started reading it already, and have made a short list of neighborhoods I want to visit when I hopefully visit in June.  The writing is very informative but friendly.  I'm sure it may be a bit outdated, but I figure its a good start.

After our purchases, we decided that we would try to conquer the subway again.  We figured out that we needed the 6 and headed to the nearest entrance.  Unfortunately we didn't watch the signs and got on the 6 that was going downtown.  And it was an Express.  Shit.  We ended up on Canal Street, which would have been sweet if we were wanting some knock-off purses, but we just really wanted to get back to our hotel.  We finally figured out our proper entrance and got back to Penn Station.  We were a little tired from our day of travel, so being the boring gals we were, we headed to bed.  Good thing we did...Thursday was busy!
